Abstract
The problem was to find what improvement could be made in the arithmetical ability of the pupils in Grade Three of South Park, Kansas school during a six months period, by the use of a definite system of diagnostic and remedial measures.
The method used was a testing program followed by remedial measures where necessary. Results were determined by the difference in scores on Forms V and W of the New Stanford Achievement Test, one given at the beginning and the other at the close of the study.
As shown by their total arithmetic scores, fifteen of the nineteen pupils made more than normal improvement, three made less than normal improvement, and one showed no improvement. One of the pupils who showed less than normal improvement was not only absent during one sixth of the study, but he also score low on the intelligence test given.
Although the average improvement in arithmetic reasoning per pupil was only three months, the individual improvement of eight pupils was marked. one made improvement equal to two grades and seven pupils raised their arithmetic levels more than one grade.
In arithmetic computation, the average grade level of the group was raised from second grade, eight month, to third grade ,sixth month, which was an average improvement of eight months per pupil.
