Abstract
The problem was to select and illustrate the type of factual material that might be used in building a background for teaching poetry, show its use in introducing the poem and its place among other procedures in the study of a poem.
In Chapter I the importance of the problem was discussed, and a brief summary of related studies given, followed by an explanation of the organization of the material in the thesis.
Chapter II was devoted to a discussion of objectives, principles of psychology, procedures, and application of principles to teaching of poetry.
The contents of Chapter III consisted of factual material that could be used for a background in studying The Lady of the Lake, and consisted of the following topics:
1. The Social Background
2. Personal Attributes of Sir Walter Scott
3. Geography of Scotland
4. Historical Basis
Chapter IV set forth procedures for teaching The Lady of the Lake. Those used for introducing and studying the poem were given first. These were followed by suggested actives for each canto, taken as a unit of work.
