Abstract
A study of certain characteristic nature motifs is herein given as they appear in the design of ancient and modern textile fabrics.
The three countries studied to such purpose are Egypt, Persia, and India. To obtain the necessary and interesting information in order to make the study a thorough one a survey was made of the historical background of ancient design and its relationship to modern textile fabrics. Art museums were visited and plates selected which illustrated the characteristic nature motifs of each country. From modern silk ships and department stores there were chosen fabrics which seem to show a similarity between ancient and modern design.
Research pertinent to textile design has shown that Egypt, Persia, and India have characteristic nature motifs which influence their industrial arts. These motifs were applied to the ancient textiles. That they are an inspiration to present day artists, may be seen as the design in fabrics on the market today bear a close relationship to the motifs used in the industrial arts of ancient Egypt, Persia, and India.
