Abstract
This thesis arose out of the need for a brief discussion and outline of the representation of frequency distributions by theoretical frequency curves derived by the method of moments. A preliminary discussion of the rectangular histogram, the frequency polygon, and certain fundamental notions of mathematical statistics is followed by the presentation of the two most commonly encountered systems of frequency curves derived by the method of moments, the Pearsonian Generalized Frequency Curves and the Gram-Charlier Series Curves. The presentation of these two systems of curves contains the fundamental basis for development, the various types of curves in each system, the constants involved in the equations of the various types of curves, and the criteria by which the proper type of curve may be chosen from the systems for the particular distribution. A comparison of the two systems of frequency curves is given in the conclusion.
