Abstract

A study has been made of the physical properties of the three component system water, ethyl alcohol, and hydrogen chloride. Peculiarities have been found in several of the physical properties studied and hypotheses have been advanced to account for the formation of the maximum and minimum points in the physical curves. All of the physical properties did not show maximum or minimum points at the same composition of water and alcohol due to the complexity of the various factors probably enteting into the cause of the deviations from expected behaviors. However, evidence of complex molecule formation had been found at widely varying points of composition, and it appears probable that complex aggregates of molecules are formed to some extent in all concentrations of alcohol and water. The increasing concentration od HCl lessened the extent, and in some cases completely destroyed, maximum and minimum points in water-alcohol physical property curves.
