Abstract
Several investigations have found that some "natural" substances poisinous to fish and some insects contain the coumarin nucleus. The purpose of this paper is to find out if the coumarin nucleus is responsable for the activity of these compounds.
To determine this a number of simple coumarin compounds with varying substituents were made and tested for their insecticidal activity by spraying a number of flies with a kerosene or carbitol acetate-kerosene mixture containing the compound.
The results of the tests seem to indicate that insecticidal activities is not an inherent property of the coumarin nucleus.
