Abstract

Purpose. The purpose of this study is to present organized and correlated information concerning the social background of the Chaucerian age, to assist the teacher in presenting "The Canterbury Tales" and other works of Chaucer, to vitalize the study of these selections and to interest the student in reading further the literature of that period. The data contained in this study form a social background for Chaucer's works.

Procedure. Library research technique was used in making this study. Various sources were used such as biographies, social histories, encyclopedias, and periodicals. The materials found were organized into sections corresponding to the item of major interest in that division. They are: Homes, Foods, Health, Recreation, Dress, and Beliefs, Superstitions and Practices.

Conclusion. The subject matter of this paper does not lend itself to a summary, nor to any conclusions. It presents the social conditions of the Chaucerian period as recorded by writers in and on the Middle Ages.
