Abstract

It seems possible that organic thiocyanates, RSCN, might undergo partial rearrangement into the isocyanide form, RSNC, and actually exist as an equilibrium mixture of the two forms. The isocyanide form has never been detected chemically, perhaps because its velocity of rearrangement is too rapid, but most logically explained on the basis of the isocyanide structure. Measurements of the dielectric constant and dipole moments of organic thiocyanates might indicate the rearrangement, especially since an electron migration is involved in the rearrangement.

Dielectric constants of ethyl and butyl thiocyanate solution at various concentrations in benzene were determined by means of a modified beat frequency oscillator similar to that designed by Stranathan. Dipole moments were calculated, and plotted against the concentrations. The resulting curves indicate that a rearrangement does apparently take place, but it seems to be complicated by association of molecules, especially in the case of butyl thiocyanate.
