Abstract
The purpose of the thesis is to examine the methods of character portrayed in the novels of Willa Gather.
The Novels of the author were studied and evidcen of acharacterization were ntoeed. A classification of the methods by which the characters were revealed to the reader was made together with their accompanying illustrations.
It was found that Miss Cather used economy of characterization. Her novels are note concerned with plot, but with a biography of her characters, for she realizes that the deepest interest in fiction lies in the characters themselves. Miss Cather is at her best in her portrayal of the artists and pioneer. Her women characters are the protagonists; but all her characters are individualized beyond their class.
