Abstract

This study aims to give an account of the importance of the "Far Indians" in the great contest between the French and the English for empire in America.

For nearly a century (1689-1763) England and France were diplomatic rivals in the complicated politics of Europe and for a third of the century they were actually at war.1 This thesis deals with that narrow phase which has to do with the "Far Indians" in this great struggle. Although their influence extended to the close of the French and Indian War in 1763, the writer has seen fit to delimit this study to include the period covering approximately the last half of the seventeenth century and the first three decades of the 18th century.
