Abstract
Excerpt: "On three continents during the eighteenth century the French and English were fighting a duel for empire, and in each case both enlisted the support of natives. But the Iroquois along the St. Lawrence had plans of their own and sometimes the French and English were merely pawns in their game. Our problem is to inquire into the intricate relations of the Iroquois with the French and English on the one hand and the Far Western Indians on the other during those years before the continental supremacy of the English was assured. Particular attention is given the years of King Geroge's War (1744-1748) when the Iroquois were thought eventually to have aligned themselves with the English, and to the nine years of wavering allegiance preceding this supposed alignment."
