Abstract

The Eva Jessye Sacred Singers performed Paradise Lost and Regained, the works of John Milton expressed in spirituals. They were hosted by The Intrepid Vanguard of Allen African Methodist Episcopal Church in Jamaica, New York.

A quote from the Washington Tribune printed in the program:

"The Jessye singers are more than mere singers; they are actors too. To them each movement of a finger, each lifting of an eyebrow has significance. There are spirituals, then there are the 'Jessyized' spirituals, live, appealing poems, even prayers they make of some of them. As the Jessye Choir has endeared themselves to the radio audience, so they did, only doubly so, to those who heard them at Lincoln Temple in Washington."
