WHEREAS The City of Atlanta actively endorses and supports the growth and expansion of the arts into all phases of human endeavor; and
WHEREAS we recognize the arts to be both a legitimate device and discipline for our public education system; and
WHEREAS professional instruction in music is an excellent tool to this end; and
WHEREAS Dr. Eva Jessye director of the Eva Jessye Afro-American Music Collection at the University of Michigan and the original original director for Gershwin’s "Porgy and Bess" will spend four weeks in Atlanta as an artist-in-residence at Clark College and Northside High School; and
WHEREAS Dr. Jessye’s work and accomplishments are highly respected and we are proud to have such a distinguished artist visiting and teaching in our city:
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Maynard Jackson, Mayor of the City of Atlanta hereby do proclaim Friday, January 20, 1978, as
Dr. Eva Jessye Day
in Atlanta, and urge our citizens to recognize the work of this accomplished artist and to join us in wishing her a happy birthday on this day,
in witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and caused the seal of the City of Atlanta to be affixed.
