Proclamation

WHEREAS:

the borough of Manhattan in the city of New York is a community with giant buildings which penetrate the clouds and scrape the sky and is populated by men and women and organizations and institutions standing tall in the fields of art, entertainment, religion, education, culture, communications and a variety of other areas, and

WHEREAS:

except for the many individuals and organizations of stature who give added life, structure and fiber to our various events and communities, all the compassion, concern, vibrance and vitality of this borough of Manhattan and city of New York would be of lesser quality, and

WHEREAS:

among the individuals standing tall in this city of giants is Eva Jessye, a great and gifted lady of consequence who graces our borough of Manhattan and city of New York with her presence; and

WHEREAS:

the career of this remarkable lady, Eva Jessye, in music theaterz and motion pictures spans fifty long years, and began with Major Edward Bowes at the Capitol Theatre in the Borough of Manhattan, and was highlighted with her appointment by George Gershwin as choral director of 'Porgy and Bess' at its inception, a position she has retained in numerous subsequent productions of that entertainment classic, both national and internation; and

WHEREAS;

on October 10th, 1976, Eva Jessye is being honored at a luncheon in the borough of Manhattan for the benefit of the Eva Jessye Afro-American collection at the Black Music Students Association at the University of Michigan, a superb and generous gift which serves as asnucleus for future acquisitions and donation of black music and its related arts; and

WHEREAS;

the Eva Jessye Afro-American collection contains original plays, manuscripts, opera scores, recordings, books, photographs and various objects of art, which Eva Jessye acquired in her travels throughout the United States and foreign countries.

Now, therefore, I, Percy E. Sutton, president of the borough of Manhattan, as chief elected official of the more than one million five hundred thousand residents of the borough of Manhattan, do offer my deepest appreciation for Eva Jessye, who gives so generously of her energy, concern and commitment to assist in the fulfillment of the dreams of other persons in the community of mankind, and do hereby proclaim Sunday, the 10th of October, 1976 to be known as:

"EVA JESSYE- DAY"

in the borough of Manhattan.

in witness whereof, I have here unto set my hand and caused the seal of the borough of Manhattan to be affixed this tenth day of October, 1976
