Black & White photograph taken on March 7, 1945, of 9th United States Army artillery shelling and a bombed bridge in Uerdingen, a district in the city of Krefeld, Germany. On the back of the photo is typewritten, "ETO HQ 45 18114 7 MARCH CREDIT - U.S. ARMY SIGNAL CORPS PHOTOG - SGT BRUCE C. HAWKINS 167 9TH US ARMY SHELLS EXPLODE ACROSS RHINE RIVER IN GERMAN HELD TERRITORY AT UERDINGEN [Krefeld-Uerdingen], GERMANY. BLOWN BRIDGE IS THE ADOLF HITLER BRIDGE, DESTROYED BY RETREATING GERMANS WHEN THE YANKS CAPTURED THE TOWN. SHELL BURSTS ARE TIME FIRE WHICH BREAKS ABOVE THE GROUND THROWING SHRAPNEL IN ALL DIRECTIONS. (G) ARMORED FIELD ARTY; 9TH U.S. ARMY, UERDINGEN, GERMANY".
