Abstract
Once considered a rare and severe disability, autism is now diagnosed in 1 in 68 people. School children with autism who are found to be eligible for special education and related services are educated in every academic environment, with 90% spending a portion of their school day in the general education classroom. With the increase in the number of students diagnosed and the variety of educational settings that these students are taught, it is very likely that most general education and specialized teachers (i.e., art, PE, computer, etc.) will have students with autism in their classroom at some point in their career.
