Abstract
This essay gives an overview of contemporary research on retention efforts for first-generation college students. The first section of the article focuses on college readiness for first-generation college students. The second section of the article concerns extant research on pedagogical interventions that can be used to help retain first-generation college students. This research is shared in hopes that writing instructors can use this information to reach out--and hopefully retain--a bigger portion of first-generation college students in the university system.
