Abstract

Black and white photo of George Sweatt with the Walls family. Caption reads:

"Members of the Walls Family Band

"The Silas Walls children were excellent musicians. They formed a family band that played for many of the wealthy families in Iola when they entertained in their homes. They presented an all black minstrel at the old Opera House that was located on the corner of Walnut and Jackson. The band went on thru Kansas and Missouri and raised $1,000. They gave the money to their parents so they could pay for their home. Several Iola and Humboldt residents played with the band at various times. Pictured above - Back row L to R - Edward, ALbert, George Sweatt, Fon, Russell; Front Row L to R - Maggie, Ethel, Myrtle and Claude Walls. This band existed in the late teens and early twenties."
