Description

"Contest draws 125 entries

"Victor Sullivan and Tabitha Collins earned first place honors in the amateur photo contest featured in today's Morning Sun.

"In its first year, 125 photographers participated in what will become an annual summer contest, according to Kurt Johnson, managing editor. The entries were both colorful and varied.

"'We had everything from grandchildren playing in the yard to vacation shots from the Grand Canyon,' Johnson said, 'Next year we will probably focus the competition on people and events within Crawford County and eliminate the 18-year-old age requirement, but the contest has to be considered a success in its first year.'

"Participants were asked to submit color or black and white photos taking [sic.] during calendar year 1992. The entries were divided into two categories--people and places or events.

"Prizes will be awarded to the top three entries in each category, as judged by The Morning Sun. First place winners will receive $25 and a year's subscription to the newspaper. Second place will receive $15 and third place $10.

"Victor Sullivan of Pittsburg won first place in the scenic division with a portrait of a House Wren bird taken in his back yard.

"Other winners in the scenic division were Anita Doherty of Wichita, second; Denise Kranker of Frontenac, third' Father Andrew Seiler of Arma, first honorable mention; and Justin Beasley of Pittsburg, second honorable mention.

"A picture taken by Tabitha Collins of Pittsburg was chosen as the top entry in the people division. The scene shows DeeDee and Marissa Collins of Fort Scott sharing a moment on a porch, which the judges felt captured a poignant scene common to middle class America.

"Betty Kunshek of Frontenac placed second; Cathy Huffman of Wichita was third; Dee Cox of Pittsburg earned first honorable mention; and Betty Kunshek earned second honorable mention."

The newspaper page features 4 photos by Anita Doherty, Vic Sullivan, Denise Kranker, and Justin Beasley.

The photo submitted by Vic Sullivan is available in this collection.
