Abstract

This Manual is intended for use by bird banders in North America. It was prepared jointly by the staffs of the Bird Banding Offices of the United States and Canada so as to be equally usable by both Canadian and U.S. handers. Assistance in the editing process was also received from others interested in bird banding. Instructions specific to either U.S. or Canada banding are so noted. Generally, the Bird Banding Laboratory refers to the United States Office supported by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, whereas the Canadian Office supported by the Canadian Wildlife Service is referred to as the Banding Office. Bird Banding Offices refers to both the U.S. and Canadian Banding Offices.

Close coordination is maintained between the two banding offices and identical bands, except for band number, are used in both countries. This is because birds banded in North America migrate freely between both countries.

The Manual is in loose leaf form so that obsolete pages may be removed and replaced and additional pages can also be inserted. The Manual is 3-hole punched for a standard binder which bird banders should obtain. It is intended that this Manual includes and updates banding instructions from Memoranda To All Banders (MTAB's), Memoranda to Canadian Banders, the old Manual and Bird Banding Notes.
