Permission to Use
Per fair use and academic freedom, readers may quote and otherwise cite Midwest Quarterly articles in their research. Redistribution of full or partial works and issues is not allowed. However, authors have full copyright control of their publications and may request the ability to re-print their own work(s).
AI Usage
AI and Submissions
The Midwest Quarterly may accept works created with the use of AI tools at the editors’ discretion. The author must provide documentation of their prompts and AI output to the editors for review. The documentation will not be published alongside the article, but the AI chat log or usage must be cited and/or referenced within the content of the article.
AI and Readers
The editors of the Quarterly do not condone the inputting of other authors’ work(s) into AI tools such as ChatGPT or Claude without express permission from the author. It is their belief that this is an infringement of intellectual property. Once information is inputted into these tools, it can never be removed. The tools might use this information for training or use it to answer other people’s prompts. How the tool disseminates information is not necessarily regulated and cannot guarantee the original author will be credited.
If permission cannot be obtained be obtained from the author, always presume the answer is no.
