LOGOS-SOPHIA: The Journal of the PSU Philosophical Society
In April 1987, a group of Pittsburg State University students accompanied the philosophy professor, Donald W. Viney, to the University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond, Oklahoma to hear the American philosopher, Charles Hartshorne (1897-2000), speak. Inspired by Hartshorne’s talk and by the trip, the students formed the PSU Philosophical Society with Dr. Viney as the faculty advisor. The following year, the Society published the first edition of its journal Logos-Sophia, the name formed from the two Greek words, meaning Word or Reason (Logos) and Wisdom (Sophia). Between 1988 and 2021, sixteen issues of the journal were published (with a twelve-year hiatus between the 13th and 14th volumes).
In those sixteen volumes, there are 85 articles, 10 by members of the PSU faculty and the rest by students. In volume 8, there is an early version of an article by Anita Chancey that later appeared in the journal, Process Studies. The journal has also seen the publication of 30 poems and 5 book reviews. Two special issues have been published, volume 6 (on the creation-evolution debate) and volume 11 (the letters written between Charles Hartshorne and Donald Viney). Primary responsibility for both the content and the editing of the journal has fallen to the student members of the Society. The original versions of the PSUPS logo of the gorilla contemplating the human skull were drawn by Todd Gimlin and a later version was done by Audrey Elmore. The cover art for all but two of the numbers (volumes 11 and 14) was done by students. Through an oversight, volumes 7 (1997) and 8 (1996) were dated incorrectly.
