Abstract
This study was made to discover the status of pupil progress in the elementary grades of the public schools of Kinsley, Kansas, and to analyse the classification and progress practices used in these grades.
Age-grade and grade-progress studies were made of the 337 pupils in the school and promotions and failures at the end of the second semester of 1936 were classified and analyzed. These studies revealed the number and percentage of under-age, normal age, over-age, accelerated, normal, and retarded children and the number of promotions and non-promotions in each grade. A special study was made of the status of pupil progress in the eighth grade, where the greatest amount of retardation was found. Case histories of all eighth grade pupils were made, showing intelligence, achievement, grade progress, health, home conditions, personal characteristics, language difficilty, extra-curricular interests, academic abilities and disabilities. The first two factors were determined by the use of the Henmon-Nelson Test of Mental Ability, Form A, and the New Stanford Achievement Test, Form X. Data on grade progress and health came from school records. Traits and characteristics studied were estabilished by a system of ratings made by tje teachers.
An attempt was made to give meaning to the data secured for this study by comparison with similar studies for other people.
