Abstract
The Problem. This study was undertaken to determine how an educationally effective and complete boys' intramural athletic program could be organized and administered in a three-year junior high school. The fourfold purpose includes: (1) the building of an intramural athletic program in keeping with the objectives set up by educational philosophers, physical education speacialists, and school administrators; (2) a study of the essential parts of three differently organized intramural programs; (3) the building of a better program in the writer's own school; (4) the presentation of commendable practices in handbook form for the guidance of others.
The Method. 1. Outstanding needs in the field of intramural athelics were listed: (a) Educational literature was read to determine general needs. (b) A preliminary survey was made in twelve junior high schools in this part of the state to determine the more specific needs in southeastern Kansas. Thus it was found that definite suggestions for intramural athletic programs were needed and wanted in southeastern Kansas.
2. Through professional reading and his experience as an intramural director, the writer chose eight administrative goals and wight organization practices. There were submitted for evaluation to a number of school men who unanimously approved them as desirable intramural objectives.
3. The intramural athletic programs of the two schools as well as the specially planned programs of the two schools as well as the specially planned program in the writer's school were evaluated against these intramural objectives to determine the best practives and procedures for presentation in handbook form. Following the handbook conclusions are drawn concerning the present trends in junior high school intramural athletics and recommendations are made for the improvement of these same programs.
The Handbook. A handbook is offered which contains descriptions of outstanding practices and plans for organization of the many details engountered in carrying out a sucessful intramural athletic program. These suggestions are grouped into eight units: (1) junior high school athletic policies, (2) general organization for all sports, (3) the point system, (4) awards, (5) carrying out the program, (6) equipment and its cost, (7) methods of organization for wach activity, and (8) public relations values.
