Abstract
Graphic structural formulae for organic molecules, the "shorthand" of organic chemistry, are interpretations of chemical reactions. A structural formula embodies a concise expression of the chemical properties of the compound. The correlation between chemical structure and physical properties is incomplete and often somewhat uncertain. Structural formulae do however enable a better understanding of many physical properties.
Whether or not chemical structure bears definite relationship to physiological properties is, as yet, in most cases uncertain. The organic structures of many drugs have been proved, and more or less definite relationships between structure and drug action have been established.
