Abstract

The purpose of this study is to demonstrate that Dudley Taylor Cornish and his book The Sable Arm have proven influential in the study of African American soldiers in the Civil War, and in Civil War history in general. Other books that may be viewed as the "foundation stone" of African American soldiers are analyzed. Comish's work, however, surpasses those books because of the author's scholarly attention to detail and historical evidence. The result is that Comish's work has no rival. This study also treats the question of why the book was written and the influence it has had, Its impact can be seen through the study of books written since The Sable Arm's original publication. Also, various historians have commented on the impact of the book, both upon. themselves and on historiography. Additional study was made to see what impact Comish has made with his other works and in other areas as well. The conclusion is that Dudley Cornish and The Sable Arm have had a tremendous influence upon the historiography and historians in the fields of Civil War history and black military history in the Civil War.
