Abstract
Following a recommendation that further study be made on the socialization of extra-curricular activities, the writer made this study to find to what extent socialization is realized through participation in extra-curricular activities at Lincoln High School, Salina, Kansas.
Books, periodicals, student handbooks, and handbooks of youth organizations were studied to determine the social values most important for living successfully in society. These qualities or social values were used in making the three questionnaires which were given to the teachers and pupils of Lincoln High School. One questionnaire was given to the pupils in October and another in March.
During the first week in October, 1948, questionnaires were given to four hundred sixty seven students and twenty four teachers. After the first student questionnaires were completed, the results were tabulated so that the second questionnaire tor the pupils could be made. This was given the first week in March, 1949. A check list of qualities gained by the pupils was given to the sponsors of activities in April. The writer completed the thesis after the results of the second questionnaires and the check list were compiled.
That the extra-curricular program at Lincoln is effective in forming worthwhile social character traits is shown by the fact that between the administration of student questionnaires one and two, all of the pupils who participated in extra-curricular activities felt that they had gained in social character traits. The teachers felt that the value accruing from extra-curricular activities is worth the time spent. Ninety-six per cent of the pupils felt that the values gained will help them in later lite.
