Abstract
Tsa-La-Gi (Cherokee, in that language) is a composition designed for the ballet. Each portion of this work is based upon the opening three-note motive, through expansion, figuration, inversion, juxtoposition with other devices and so forth. The larger Rondo-like organization of the composition describes, in several episodes, the history of the Cherokee people. The opening section depicts their homeland and their cohesive society. The second section is the confusion of the rounding-up of the people for the westward march. The next section depicts the actual Trail of Tears and the final section shows a people who have suffered greatly but are still unbowed. They have great pride in being Tsa-La-Gi.
