Richard C. Hackett, Mayor

For over sixty years the musical and intellectual gifts of Dr. Eva Jessye have illuminated the horizons of human understanding like a flaming torch in a world of darkness.

Dr. Jessye is a black pioneer in all areas of musical endeavor. As a choral director, in opera, in musical comedy, in films, on television and radio, as composer/ arranger, she has earned accolades throughout the world. She indeed stands tall among giants.

Dr. Jessye first achieved fame in a time when black women were not allowed to be achievers; she is a superb role model for all women and men.

Her triumphs were the result of determination, musical convictions and her thirst for justice. Hers was not an easy road to glory, but one born of passion--a passion for beauty, for harmony and for order.

It is fitting that we, too, honor her here today. It gives me particular pleasure to make this great artist and lady an honorary citizen of the City of Memphis, Tennessee.

Sincerely,

Richard C. Hackett
