PROCLAMATION - EVA JESSYE DAY- JANUARY 19TH, 1974

Ann Arbor is ever on the move, and our University is in the front ranks of institutions and organizations contributing to the splendid image of our City.

On the 19th of this month a priceless addition to the already prodigious archives of the University will be formally accepted.

The many artists, dignitaries, scholars, students and townspeople expected to attend-will be both informed and inspired by the wealth of material contributed by and relating to musicians, writers, painters, dancers, directors, and encompassing concert, opera, folk, jazz, theatre, motion pictures, television and radio, from 1890 to and including the present and foreseeable future.

This acquisition is an enviable one, and establishes the University of Michigan as leader in the recognition of the great contribution made to our culture by the Black citizens of America. From their heritage they have enriched the world.

The donor of the collection is Dr. Eve Jessye, famous composer, writer, and choral director, now residing in Ann Arbor. Dr. Jessye has in the past conducted her choir in concert in many Michigan cities, and also has been cited by Detroit and Windsor, Canada, for participation in the first annual Freedom Festival.

Dr. Jessye has given unstintingly of her talent and experience, as well as historical treasures for the betterment of Ann Arbor. Therefore, with sincere appreciation and in honor of this worthy humanitarian, I, James E. Stephenson, Mayor of the City of Ann Arbor do hereby proclaim January 19th as

Eva Jessye Day

and urge all citizens to attend the dedication of the Eva Jessye Afro-American Music Collection which will take place at 3:00 P.M., Saturday, January 19th at the Frederick Stearns Building on North Campus.

I hereby set my hand and seal this 10th day of January, 1974.

[Signed] James E. Stephenson; Mayor
