The City of Philadelphia takes pride in its reputation as a center of culture and the performing arts, and in particular, its reputation for the performance of good music; and
Whereas…
Among our nation’s talented and dedicated women, Dr. Eva Jessye ranks as an outstanding example of a full and productive life in the world of music, possessing a talent that has distinguished itself through musical excellence for five decades, and she is now making a retirement performance with a concert to be held at Tindley Temple United Methodist Church in Philadelphia on October 6; and
Whereas…
Dr. Jessye has earned distinction as a newspaperwoman and author, actress and instructor, but her greatest triumphs have come through the choir that bears her name and from her efforts as a composer and conductor. In this performance presented by the Afro American Federation with the Black United Methodist Preachers of Philadelphia she will offer her great oratorio, “Paradise Lost and Regained” based on the poem of John Milton in a framework of spirituals:
