RESOLUTION
A RESOLUTION COMMENDING DOCTOR EVA JESSYE, A FORMER MUSKOGEE RESIDENT, FOR HER OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENTS IN THE FIELD OF MUSIC
WHEREAS, Dr. Eva Jessye was the first Black Woman to gain international acclaim as a choral director, and,
WHEREAS, Dr. Jessye is well known for her contributions to the field of music, including her folk oratorio, Paradise Lost and Regained, and
WHEREAS, Dr. Jessye has enjoyed a brilliant and distinguished career as a musician, composer and humanist, and has shared her vast knowledge of Black Choral Tradition with young people in many colleges and universities; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Jessye taught in the Muskogee and Taft School Systems from 1916 through 1919, and during this time brought her knowledge and love of music to the people of Muskogee;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, COLEMAN B. FITE, MAYOR, and Members of the City Council of the City of Muskogee, adopt this Resolution of Commendation to Dr. Eva Jessye, for her many accomplishments in music and her willingness to share her knowledge with others.
