Description

Color photograph of two grand gentlemen who are the biggest spirit supporters of Pittsburg State University, Jack Overman and Gus Gorilla. The gorilla image was first drawn by art student Helen Waskey in 1923 and was officially and unanimously adopted by the student body on January 15, 1925. No one can recall when the mascot became known as Gus Gorilla. The campus helped Jack Overman celebrate his 95th birthday on August 23, 2013. Overman was the first director of the Student Center from 1951 until his retirement in 1985 at which time the building was rededicated and named in his honor. Overman helped break ground on the Overman Student Center's expansion on April 30, 2014. Both icons exhibit boundless enthusiasm for PSU.
