Description
Black & White photograph of the Ninth Army Air Force, 404th Fighter Group at the Fritzlar, Germany (Y.86), airfield circa April 1945. The Republic P-47 Thunderbolt fighter plane in the bottom left foreground with 4K, M painted on the fuselage belonged to the 506th Fighter Squadron. Other Republic P-47 Thunderbolts sitting along the edge of the strip in the center of the image belonging to the 506th are identified as Z (olive colored) and the third P-47 in the center is H. The seventh P-47 is identifed at 4K, U. The P-47s with 7J painted on the fuselages beonged to the 508th Fighter Squadron. Maintenance personnel are working on a 7J in the lower right by the hanger. To help navigate the planes, there is a person laying on the wing of each of the P-47s that are taxiing down the strip .
