Before the numbered U.S. highway system was introduced in the 1920s, an informal network of named automobile highways called the National Auto Trails system guided drivers. The Jefferson Highway was one of these. Stretching from Winnipeg, Manitoba to New Orleans, Louisiana, the highway was over 1,200 miles long and ran through seven states.
