Description
Joe Skubitz was born on May 6, 1907 in Frontenac, Kansas. He attended Girard High School, graduating in 1926 and then attended the Kansas State Teachers College, now Pittsburg State University. He received bachelor’s and master’s degrees while working in public education, and in 1946 received a law degree from George Washington Law School. Skubitz ran for office in 1962 and represented the 5th District of Kansas as a Republican from 1963 to 1979. Among the things he worked towards were benefits for miners suffering from black lung, and to have the old fort at Fort Scott named a National Historic Site administered by the National Park Service.
