Pittsburg State: Then & Now

Leonard H. Axe Library, named in dedication to past President Axe of Pittsburg State University, was built upon the existing Gibson Dining Hall and bookstore (1968) in 1979. Serving as a modern replacement to Porter Library, housed in a building now home to the PSU Department of Art, the function and operations of libraries have dramatically changed since that time.  Axe Library is home to our books, archives, and library partners:

• Writing Center
• Student Success Center
  • First Year Students
  • Academic Advising
  • Career Services
• Communications Center
• Axe Grind Coffee Shop

The library has gone through several renovations over the years, but the mission stays the same:

• providing university-level scholarly resources that support the academic programs and faculty research interests. Collections will reflect diverse viewpoints and areas of scholarship;
• affirming Library Service’s commitment to enabling every person to engage in the lifelong pursuit of knowledge by supporting the open exchange of ideas, innovation, intellectual freedom, diversity, and equitable access to information;
• continuing Library Service’s tradition of meeting curricular changes and intellectual demands with thoughtful innovations that respectfully build on past achievements.
