Abstract
The occupation of the national fortifications in Charleston harbor by the command of Major Robert Anderson in itself offers to the student or American history a stirring story. It is a tale of a small and gallant band surrounded by a overwhelmingly hostile force which threatened to attack them at any moment. Though uninformed of the intent and purpose of their own government and knowing they could make but a futile defense, they were determined to resist to the utmost any efforts to seize the forts in their possession.
