Abstract
Probably no social custom, unless it be the consumption of alcoholic beverages, has occasioned more speculation and controversy than has the habit of smoking tobacco. The apparent increase in the prevalence of this practice since the World War, especially among women, has given a new impetus to such conjectures and has renewed interest in re search to determine whether or not smoking is detrimental to the smoker, and if so, to establish the nature of the injury.
