Abstract
This study has been prepared to determine the extent and character or the mythology in the content or the Literature and Life Series, which has been adopted for use in the high schools of Kansas. This information is essential to discover what knowledge is needed for the student using these books. During eight years of teaching literature in junior and senior high schools, the writer has been increasingly aware of the pupil's apalling lack or knowledge of classical mythology. Much of our best English poetry lies beyond the reach of many readers because of their unfamiliarity with the commonplaces of literary allusion, reference and tradition. Hence this study has proceeded trom a desire to ascertain the amount of orientation in the field of mythology which is requisite for the pupil who studies the books of this series.
