Abstract
Teachers and students of English literature often experience difficulty in understanding that literature in relation to the historical background upon which it was produced. For this understanding they seem to need:
- Usable summaries of British history for each of the periods treated;
- Specific background for certain masterpieces for which the general summaries are insufficient;
- Supplementary reading, especially historical fiction, which will give a better idea of the events and conditions of each period that can be gained from a study of a brief history;
- Visual material which should be helpful in making the history of the period more vivid and real to the students.
The intention of this thesis is to supply, in some measure, such supplementary material for use of teachers of English literature in high school who use the Literature and Life1 series, the text books generally used in Kansas high schools.
