Abstract
There is no romance more thrilling and fascinating than the story of the early settlement of Kansas. Organized as a territory when the content for the extension of slavery was at fever heat, it became the battle field of contending forces. The South determined that it should held as a slave territory; the North was as equally determined that it should represent freedom. The struggle drew the gaze of the people upon "Bleeding Kansas."
Allen County was one of the first thirty-three counties established by the first territorial legislature. Thus the county was one of the pioneers in the early history of the state, and it was with this in mind that this paper was prepared. It is for the purpose of getting accurate knowledge of the organization and development of the county, townships, and cities by these early pioneers whose courage and sacrifices made possible the peace and prosperity we now enjoy.
Allen County was named in honor of William Allen, United States Senator of Ohio. It is located in the eastern part of the state, in the second tier of counties west of the Missouri River and about fifty miles north of the Indian Territory. In extent it is twenty-one miles north and south and twenty-four miles east and west, containing five hundred and four square miles or 322.560 acres. [Taken from introduction]
