Abstract
Since its transplantation from Europe to America in the early 1900's an interest in the growth of the community theatre movement has been reflected in the wealth of books and studies that have been written on its development. In fact, in this writer's experience, interest in the community theatre movement seems to be prevalent anywhere drama-minded individuals assemble; many dram enthusiasts feel that the community theatre movement is the soul, substance, and lifeblood of the living theatre in America today. This thesis on the origin and development of the Joplin Little Theatre is a small contribution to the study of this community theatre movement; it might prove helpful if a general understanding of the community theatre in United States is provided.
