Abstract

Though a great amount of work has been done concerning the effects of salts upon the organic constituents of all muscular tissues of the earthworm, very little has actually been accomplished showing the effect of salts on the rhythmic contractions of that animal. However, the normal peristaltic activity of the muscles of the earthworm has been shown to represent a characteristic behavior from its anterior to its posterior extremity.

It is the purpose of this investigation to demonstrate the effects of various concentrations of salts on this normal rhythmic activity of the various regions of the earthworm.
